Why is rugby so popular in New Zealand?

There's no question that rugby is the national sport of New Zealand but how did it become so popular? And why is a country which such a small population, so dominant in the world's 8th most popular sport?


You'll have read to the end to see the world's top 20 sports, but for now let's focus on rugby in New Zealand, especially the national team which is known as the All Blacks (pictured right in black).


While the All Blacks are not always the number one team in the world, the 100+ countries that play rugby know that the New Zealand is the most formidable team internationally. There is a mystique and an aura about the All Blacks, which is why opponents both fear and respect them so greatly.


This video was produced in 2018, but it's a good overview of the iconic All Blacks team and why they're still the most lethal rugby team in the world.
